New Arizona Family, Inc. (NAFI), a public benefit organization, was established in 1970 to provide substance abuse treatment, mental health services and programs for low-income persons, including those who are seriously mentally ill (SMI) and women who are pregnant and parenting. NAFI operates a residential substance abuse treatment program that last year served 250 indigent women and their children.   In addition, NAFI provides residential and/or outpatient supportive services to 1,400 other men and women who suffer from mental illness and/or substance abuse.  NAFI has success helping addicts, seriously mentally ill individuals and their families face many issues and struggles...

The mission of New Arizona Family is to safely and responsibly assist and support adults and families accomplish individualized goals of recovery from substance abuse and achievement of greater self-sufficiency.  The vision of NAFI is to create and operate safe and supportive environments where adult individuals and families can build on existing strengths, learn new skills, and remediate previous and existing limitations.  NAFI’s latest projects and priorities include the design, development and implementation of strategies to address the long-term needs of women and children after treatment.

NAFI’s current work in the community includes:
1.) Affordable Housing.   In 2004 NAFI began developing affordable housing projects for the population it serves.  The two current projects are:
NAFI’s Pinchot Community Apartments and Child Care Facility is currently in its design phase.  The project includes an 18-unit apartment complex with a laundry room and community room.  The apartment complex will be located near NAFI's Pinchot Learning Academy, a childcare facility that will also offer job training opportunities.  This facility will serve women, and their children, who are returning to the workforce following the successful completion of our residential substance abuse treatment program.
Desert Esperanza’s Scattered Sites includes the acquisition and rehabilitation of four single-family homes to provide permanent housing, with supportive services, for 16 seriously mentally ill adults in recovery from substance abuse.  One of the four homes is made ADA accessible. The housing units provide affordable housing for low-income adults transitioning from 24-hour residential substance abuse treatment programs. This is a population in dire need of affordable, high-quality housing in which to maintain their sobriety and maintain the mental/emotional stability gained while in treatment. The project also provides easy access to the programs, services and neighborhood amenities needed by this population.  Each home includes all major appliances and is furnished by NAFI. Support services are provided by NAFI.  In addition, NAFI coordinates supportive services as needed with other area organizations including community activities, transportation and special support groups.  Additional support is provided to residents through the services of a Case Manager.
2.) Two Outpatient and Extended Care facilities that serve the Phoenix metro area and the East Valley. These facilities provide general mental health services, addiction education and recovery services, outreach, and support services for more than 1,400 adults annually.  We work with the general public, parolees re-entering the community, recovering addicts, and seriously mentally ill adults.
3.) Pinchot Gardens Residential Community.  Last year Pinchot Gardens Residential Community provided recovery treatment and support services to 250 pregnant and parenting women and their children.   Fifty (50) babies were born in the program in the 2005/06 year. The program focuses on treatment, counseling, life skills, education services, medical services, parenting and community transition.  It includes the Pinchot Gardens Nursery that is home to newborns born in treatment and toddlers who live with their mothers.  The 13th Annual Golf and Corporate Challenge for Children is a Golf Tournament and Charity Auction that benefits NAFI's mom and kids program.  We invite you and your guests to a day and evening to remember!  The proceeds from this event support Pinchot Gardens Residential Community and our on-site nursery. Thank you for your consideration and support for Arizona's families. Since we are a 501(c)(3) charity, your donations/contributions may be tax deductible.
